The road has a shoulder

The stop is the point of the stop. Somewhere between two provinces there is a view that people pull over for, and it has been pulling people over for a long time.

A deep narrow canyon, water falling from the cliffs on the left, a wide muddy river below, steep forested slopes and hazy mountains under cloud.

The long road is usually described as distance. It is more accurate to describe it as a sequence of interruptions — the view, the padstal, the biltong stop, the place the children are allowed out of the car.

Out-of-towners photograph this. Locals drive past it to work. Both are using the same road, and the difference between a landmark and a commute is only whether you are stopping.

A record of the country that only holds the postcard version is missing the people who use it as a route.
