One screen, one room
The photograph is of the first match of the 2010 World Cup, at Soccer City. What it documents is not football. It is a room full of people watching the same thing at the same time, which is now almost extinct.

Match day is the last reliable appointment in the national calendar. It does not require a ticket, a subscription, or an opinion about the sport. It requires a screen and the willingness to be in a room with other people when the thing happens.
The vuvuzela is the part everyone remembers and the part most misunderstood. It was never decoration; it was a way for people in the stands to be audible to each other in a way that singing alone could not manage.
The same ritual scaled down: a tavern with one television, a living room with an extension lead, a street corner with a generator. Same event, different room, identical behaviour — everybody leaning the same direction.
The record is from 2010 because that is when the photograph was taken. The ritual is not a memory. It is happening somewhere right now, on a smaller screen.
