A white van, a tyre being checked, a small device in the hand. The work is diagnostic before it is mechanical: find out whether the thing is a problem before taking anything apart.

Vehicle maintenance at the rank is the part of the transport system that has no schedule and no invoice in the ordinary sense. It happens between trips, by whoever is available, with the tools that are already there.

The photograph is also a reminder about who does this work. Not a technician in overalls — a young person, kneeling, handling a pressure gauge correctly.

We are publishing it with an empty region badge on purpose. A record that cannot say where it was taken should say so, rather than borrowing a province for the sake of a tidier map.
