Loading is the work
Two men inside a white minibus at a depot — one reading a newspaper, one on a phone. This is what the rank looks like when nothing appears to be happening.

The rank’s real product is not the trip; it is the wait organised so that the trip becomes possible. Someone has to sit in the vehicle until it is full. That sitting is the job, and it is unpaid time disguised as a vehicle.
In the photograph, the newspaper and the phone are the two technologies of that wait. One is cheap, shareable and about the world outside; the other is the queue itself, the messages, the arrangement of who is coming.
Western Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo — the rank is where a large share of the country’s daily movement is actually scheduled, and the scheduling is done by a person in a seat calling out a destination.
It is also a workshop. A minibus is repaired where it waits, because the vehicle cannot afford to be out of service and the driver cannot afford a workshop.
